    Bruges

Bruges for couples: when it is quiet, and where

Bruges takes millions of visitors a year into a medieval centre you can walk across in an hour. Between eleven and five it is busy. Outside those hours it is a different city.

That is the only advice that really matters for couples: it is not what you do in Bruges that decides how it feels, but when. Below is how to stay out of the crowds — by time of day and by season.

Before seven in the morning and after seven in the evening

    before 7:00to yourselves
    11:00 – 17:00busy
    after 19:00quiet

Day trippers arrive by coach and leave by coach. They are here between late morning and early evening, and they move in a fairly small loop through the centre.

Get up early and those same streets are yours. The same is true after dinner: around seven the centre empties out, the facade lighting comes on, and it goes quiet in a way you would not believe during the day.

The practical consequence for a weekend: plan nothing between eleven and five. That is the moment to go back, have a drink, or sit in the sauna while the rest of the city queues.

If you have the choice, come outside the high season. Bruges in winter is a different city from Bruges in July. It is quieter, it is cheaper, more is available at weekends, and the city looks its best in mist and evening light.

December is the exception — the centre is busier then than in July. If you want quiet, choose January, February or November.

    Where it is quiet

Bruges has a busy core and an edge that stays almost empty, and the difference is often a single street. Turn one side street away from the main axis and the noise falls away.

    Dinner for two

Book a table. For a good restaurant in the centre on a Friday or Saturday evening that is not excessive caution but a condition — certainly in high season and in December.

And eat early or late, not at eight. Many good kitchens in Flanders do not open until around half past six; be there then and you eat in peace. At eight you are sitting between two large tables.

    Back to the suite

The advantage of sleeping in the centre is exactly this: you can go back in between. No traffic, no parking problem, no half hour on the bus.

The Rose Suites is on the Elf-Julistraat, a kilometre from the Markt — about twelve minutes on foot through the Ezelstraat quarter. Two of the five suites have their own jacuzzi and sauna — which in winter, after an hour outside, is the difference between a nice day and a good one.

If you come by car: the centre is largely low-traffic, so you park once and leave it there.

    Our address and the street

The Rose Suites is at Elf-Julistraat 27, 8000 Bruges. The street is inside the city centre, north-west of the Markt, and it is residential: houses, front doors, parked bicycles and almost no through traffic. Evenings here are quiet in a way that surprises people who booked this centrally.

    On foot

The Markt is about a kilometre away, some twelve minutes at an easy pace. You walk south-east through the Ezelstraat quarter and the medieval centre unfolds in front of you.

Bruges station is a longer walk, about twenty-five minutes. Distances in Bruges are short; the cobbles count for more than the kilometres, so bring comfortable shoes.

    By train

Trains from Brussels, Ghent and the airport all arrive at Bruges station, south of the centre. From there it is about twenty-five minutes on foot, a taxi from the rank in front of the station, or a city bus towards the centre. The departure boards in the station show the current services, so we would rather not print bus numbers here that change.

    What to bring

Bruges is a walking city with cobbles, so comfortable shoes do more for you here than an umbrella. Rain is common enough to bring a light jacket in any season. Bed linen, towels and toiletries are provided, as are a kettle, coffee and a fridge in the room. If you want to cook, the shared kitchen downstairs has pans, plates and the rest, and there is a supermarket a few minutes' walk away.

    Arrival and self check-in

There is no reception. You receive a door code before you travel and let yourself in, so a late train or a long drive is never a problem. Check-in is from 15:00, check-out by 11:00. If you arrive earlier we can usually store your luggage — just send us a message.

    Frequently asked questions

    When is Bruges quiet?

Before eleven in the morning and after seven in the evening, and from October to March with December as the exception. The day trippers are here between late morning and early evening.

Is Bruges worth it in winter?

For couples it is probably the best season: quieter, cheaper, and the city looks its finest in mist and evening light. Only December is busy.

How many days do you need for Bruges?

Two nights is enough to see the centre calmly without rushing. One night is possible, but then you are mostly there during the busiest hours.

    When is it busiest?

The summer months and December. In both cases: early or late in the day makes more difference than which day of the week you choose.
